The idea for “Fashion Reloaded” was born from the textile legacy of a loved one. Madlena Komitova, head of the City of Vienna’s pensioners’ clubs, wanted to breathe new life into the clothing treasures. Together with *Klub+ Atelier* manager Irena Reichel, the project was launched: senior citizens create and present their own collection.
At the show on September 10 at Vienna Fashion Week, the senior citizens impressed on the catwalk with a variety of elegant and stylish pieces. Impressive evening gowns in bright orange with floral details and unusual trouser suits combined with colorful fabric coats showed the creativity and fashionable aspirations of the project. Black leather skirts, sheer fabrics and swinging, elfin dresses added a touch of extravagance.
Participants such as Anita Habershuber, Neli Waroschanov and Monika Luis acted as designers and models. The focus is on upcycling existing items of clothing – a strong signal against fast fashion. There was also support from Vienna Fashion Week labels such as “Pitour” and “Shakkei”, which donated designer pieces that were reinterpreted.
But the project goes beyond fashion: it breaks with clichés about senior citizens and shows their young-at-heart side. This can also be clearly seen on their own Instagram channel! “The senior citizens in our group want to realize their dreams even at 60, 70 or 80+,” says Reichel. “Fashion Reloaded” makes it clear that participation and self-realization are a human right, even in old age.
Women in particular, who often put their talents on the back burner in favor of the family, are given a stage here to express themselves creatively. “It’s a unique opportunity to do something for yourself,” emphasizes Elena Sofia Gkotsi, team leader of the pensioners’ clubs.
The appearance at Vienna Fashion Week was just the starting signal. With their zest for life and individuality, these senior citizens are making a lasting fashion and social statement.
