The Slovakian designer behind MARINÁ presented her new collection PERPETUUM in VIENNA on Saturday. She drew her inspiration from the visual arts and worked with geometric details. The focus was on bold cuts and monochrome colours.
It was immediately apparent that designer Marina Žiaková’s collection was inspired by the works of Milan Dobeš, among others: just like the artist, who also works in Bratislava, she plays with shapes and uses a few colours in a targeted manner. MARINÁ’s show proved that minimalism doesn’t have to mean boredom. Her looks make do with a single colour, including various rich shades of blue, black and white.
But it was still allowed to glitter and shine: iridescent fabrics and sequins were on show several times. Metallic details gave otherwise rather plain dresses that certain something. However, the cut-outs stood out in particular in the collection. Either as a large circular statement at the waist or as casual gaps in the pieces that look like they have been deconstructed and then reassembled. MARINÁ’s looks were created without any eye-catching make-up or accessories, and even without shoes.
But the outfits also had enough to say on their own. There was plenty of volume, whether on the legs, the sleeves or the collar. The designer favoured a straight cut at the shoulders, which gave the models a strong appearance. This clean, sometimes futuristic aesthetic mixed with dazzling details and geometric cut-outs shows how MARINÁ remained true to herself with this collection on the one hand, while successfully daring to try something new on the other.
